Children's Laureate...
--.
Michael Rosen. Children under 14 are being invited to nominate the next Children's Laureate when Michael Rosen steps down next year. This is a great opportunity for children to have a sense that this Laureateship really is for them. The winner of the best nomination (regardless of which author wins) will be invited to the announcement ceremony in London on June 9th.

Please encourage your child/children to have a go - and let me know if they do!

All the information you need should be available from www.childrenslaureate.org.uk

To make it even more exciting, I am offering £5 Book Tokens to the first five entries that meet all the criteria, and I will give a £25 Book Token to ONE local winner (ie someone who can come to the bookshop to collect their prize!) - so there's bags of incentive to have a go! (You'll need to send a copy of the entry to me as well as to the organisers.)

Closing date is 31st January 2009.

Good luck!

Serious Reader's Book Lights...

Serious Reader's Book Lights. If you've ever been intrigued by the ads in Sunday magazines for the Serious Reader's Book Lights, we are now able to order the lights for you. We have a floor standing lamp in the bookshop which you are free to try out for yourself and then place your order with us, we will get the light delivered to your own home, or we can take delivery here for you if that's easier. These reading lights are a top quality product and I recommend you come and have a look!

Write Christmas Cards In Peace...
--.
Round table - click to enlarge. Not only can you buy a wide range of lovely Christmas cards in the bookshop, you are also welcome to bring your own Christmas Cards in and write them here at our big, round table. You'll find peace and quiet, we'll ply you with coffee, and if you like, you can listen to gentle Christmas music to put you in the mood for the task. Make it a special time for you, and give yourself the time and space you need. You can come any morning, and most afternoons, just avoid   reading group sessions

(Not) Christmas Eve!...
--.
Another Night Before Christmas - 2 places left! As my daughter Beth is getting married in Canada straight after Christmas I shall not be in the shop on Christmas Eve. Instead we shall celebrate the traditional book-shop Christmas Eve on Tuesday 23rd December: please put this date in your diary!

We shall be serving (non-alcoholic) mulled wine throughout the day, and at four o'clock we shall have our candle-lit reading of The Night Before Christmas at which we give out hand-made red felt stockings - stuffed with Christmas goodies - to all the children and have a wonderful, magical reading of the traditional Night Before Christmas story followed by Carol Ann Duffy's beautiful re-telling of that poem - which is amazingly gorgeous and completely makes my Christmas every year!

After the reading there will be soft drinks and chocs for the children and sparkling wine and mince pies for the adults. (Adults may come without children, but it may be standing room only.)

Only TWO children's places places left! `

There will be a collection for the Deaf Africa Fund at this event
