Books to last a lifetime
Here at Wenlock Books we celebrate real books which will last a lifetime: not just the standard editions but also quality imprints of the classics such as Eland Books for travel literature, Persephone for twentieth century women's writing, Little Toller for British nature writing and rural life, Vintage Children's Classics for young ones, Slightly Foxed for memoirs, and of course Everyman's for a library of essential volumes.
One of the benefits of being a small, independent bookshop is that our stock is carefully curated. Every book is here for a reason and has been chosen by us based not on hype, but on word-of-mouth, critical reviews, the tests of time and our own reading. Whether it is the latest and best of contemporary fiction, much-loved classics or forgotten treasures, you are sure to find something wonderful to nurture, entertain, challenge or inspire you.
Our poetry shelves are widely informed by the poets we bring to the Wenlock Poetry Festival each year. We have a substantial poetry section full of their books and those of the poets they recommend, and you'll also find the best of Shropshire's resident poets and many old favourites.
Lives & Letters
Famous, infamous or just plain interesting? Good life-writing can be as engrossing, enlightening and entertaining as the best fiction. Our mix of traditional biography and contemporary memoir is carefully chosen to ensure a good read.
Our history shelves contain a selection of the latest popular history titles, with a focus on British history. A lot has happened in the world over the past two thousand years, however, and we haven't got room for it all. Fortunately, we can order whatever you need if we don't have it in stock.
Enjoy the best of rural life and nature from the comfort of your armchair. We stock the classic Collins New Naturalist series and Little Toller books, as well as a frequently updated range of titles from contemporary writers.
Local history and topography
Shropshire has been a favourite of poets, artists and naturalists for centuries. We hold a comprehensive selection of books highlighting the county's beauty, its rural and industrial heritage and the literary work it has inspired, from A E Housman's A Shropshire Lad to Katherine Swift's The Morville Hours. We also stock OS maps and walking books for those visiting Much Wenlock before heading to the hills.
... and more
If it's good, we'll stock it, whatever the subject. Visit us to find out what else we've got on our shelves, ask for our latest recommendations or share your own. For details of our children's books, please click here.
