Books Are My Bag very kindly asked us to provide some booky recommendations for day 4 of their advent calendar!
Our three recommendations are:
The Twelve Poems of Christmas Volume 7 by Candlestick Press
Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without the latest volume of poems chosen by the Poet Laureate. This year’s collection is the most contemporary yet with poems from Liz Berry, Sean Borrodale, Collete Bryce, Theo Dorgan, Paula Meehan and Carol Ann Duffy, among others. As much a part of Christmas now as trees and carols, it’s just right for posting (it even comes with its own envelope) and at under a fiver make the perfect stocking filler.
The Art of Being Normal by Lisa Williamson
Right at the beginning of the year Lisa Williamson’s debut novel, The Art of Being Normal, was published to much critical acclaim, and it’s a book that will make the perfect gift for any lover of Young Adult fiction. Telling the story a transgender teenager, The Art of Being Normal is as important as it is enjoyable to read. Full of love, heartache, pain, and joy this book is everything that anyone could ever want from a story. Just in case you need any more reasons to read this, the ending is set at Christmas making this the perfect festive read!
Silent Nights: Christmas Mysteries (British Library Crime Classics)
This year’s Christmas offering from the British Library Crime Classics series is a collection of seasonal stories from the likes of Arthur Conan Doyle, Marjorie Allingham, G.K. Chesterton and Dorothy L. Sayers, alongside some of their lesser known counterparts. With some fiendishly clever mysteries to exercise the little grey cells, it is sure to delight anyone who likes a good old-fashioned murder to accompany their mince pies and sherry.
